Motor is the most import part for two wheeled balance scooter. Whether one balance scooter is good or not depends mostly on the two motors. A good self balance scooter needs two good “legs’, Those two “legs” are motors. So let us talk about what kind of motor is good for smart balance wheel.

Since the motor is sealed, it needs some external tools to judge it fundamentally, such as multimeter. You also can judge from appearance of materials and general performance. The above methods can simply be attributed to : one listen, second look, third touch and forth detect.

One Listen: Listen the power. When in test running, consumers start with plenty of load to test if it’s full of power. If not, it may be cheating on workmanship and materials.

Second: look at the enclosure. A good motor with plating outer may look more bright. Then you can see the motor identification, generally professional manufacturers marked the wheels with codes, there have abbreviations and production date time, which is a manifestation of the brand quality.

Third: Touch the temperature. After the motor stops, to touch and sense the temperature. The lower the temperature is, the better the heat dissipation, so the better the performance.

Forth: Detect the resistor. 1. Detect the AC three phase motor, 500V megohm meter is OK.

To test the insulation resistant from three terminal lines on motor housing. Above 0.5M, it means it’s not in short cut. 2. Multimeter test: To test the resistance among A/B/C, if they are equal. The larger the resistance, the worse the quality. And the bigger the motor power, the smaller the resistance is. But the three phase can be 0 Euro unless extra big motor like above 50KM. But there haven’t appeared such vehicle in the market.

As shown above, the motor of self balance scooter is in-wheel motor, also known as permanent magnet brushless motor, which composed of wheels, tires, stators and covers. Magnet is attached to the hub. The magnet height, size and demagnetization ratio on high temperature affect the power performance of the motor. Stator is wand of silicon steel sheet and copper wire, generally using 0.51mm diameter copper wire. The wand density, height and number of turns and so on  also determine the dynamic performance of the motor.

A good motor runs smoothly on flat road, no bump sense; Turning test, charp turn to see the stability of the motor; climbing test, to find a slope, to feel the ability of climbing and the sense of downhill.
